Royal Caribbean Onboard Payment Q&A

Board a Royal Caribbean ship and suddenly you're dazzled by North Star, specialty restaurants, and duty-free shops — your SeaPass card won't stop swiping. Then on the last night, you look at your bill and your heart races so fast you want to jump overboard 🌊

Don't panic! Here's everything you need to know about onboard spending, so you can party freely and settle your bill like a pro.

1. What Credit Cards Can I Bind?

  • UnionPay cards starting with 62 (single-currency or dual-currency)

  • Visa or Mastercard starting with 4 or 5 (dual-currency)

  • One card can be linked to multiple passengers in the same stateroom — the cardholder must be on the sailing

  • Bind online via the Royal Caribbean website/app during online check-in. Charges are auto-deducted before disembarkation — no signatures needed. Lazy travelers and families, this one's for you!

2. Can I Use Cash If I Don't Have a Credit Card?

Yes — USD cash or UnionPay debit cards (starting with 62) are accepted. You'll need to pre-deposit a security deposit (typically $150–300 per person, varies by ship).

Your SeaPass card has an overdraft limit — charges are posted to your account and must be settled at Guest Services before disembarkation.

If paying with cash/debit, check your balance daily so you don't accidentally max out your limit.

3. How Are Service Charges Calculated?

  • Sea and Sky Suites and below (standard staterooms): $18/person/night

  • Sky Suites: $20.50/person/night

  • Star Suite: Complimentary service (included in suite privileges)

Charges are automatically added to your SeaPass account after boarding.

  • Credit card bound: Auto-deducted before disembarkation

  • No credit card: Settle in cash or UnionPay at the front desk

Service charges may be adjusted based on ship operations.

4. If I Didn't Bind a Credit Card, How Do I Pay Service Charges?

  • The night before disembarkation, your itemized bill is delivered to your stateroom door

  • Review it for accuracy, then head to Guest Services

  • Pay with a UnionPay credit card or USD cash

  • Pro tip: Do this a day early — avoid the last-day queue that'll make you question your life choices

💡 Onboard Spending Tips:

1️⃣ Bind early, live free: Link your credit card during online check-in and forget about it — just grab your bags and go

2️⃣ Check your balance anytime: Use the Royal Caribbean app or your stateroom TV to monitor charges in real-time. Spot something weird? Go to Guest Services immediately

3️⃣ Prepay service charges: Some sailings let you prepay gratuities — sometimes with a small perk

4️⃣ Watch your cash limit: Remember your deposit amount so you're not scrambling for cash at the last minute

🌊 First, Caribbean Routes Are Divided Into Three:

How to Choose a Cruise Ship from Miami?

Icon and World America both sail from Miami, both are mega-ships — so what's the real difference?

It's not about "which one is bigger." It's about whether you'll feel like your 7 days onboard were worth every penny.

1. Why Are You Torn Between These Two?

🔹 Icon: The ship that packs in the most "fun"

🔹 World America: The new ship with a more accessible price point

So the real question comes down to: 👇

👉 Do you want "so much to do I don't want to get off" — or "huge ship but my budget stays reasonable"?

2. How Fun Is It? The Activity Density Is Actually Quite Different

🚢 Icon of the Seas

✔️ Packed activity schedule ✔️ Water attractions ✔️ Family programs ✔️ High-density public area events

You'll often feel like: "If I skip things, I'm missing out."

Best for: First-time cruisers, or anyone who wants non-stop content and things to do.

👉 Think of it as: A massive floating resort theme park

🚢 MSC World America

✔️ Spacious ✔️ Your own pace ✔️ Huge ship ✔️ But activities aren't mandatory

It's not that there's less to do — it's that the pace is more relaxed.

More like: "If I want to play, I play. If not, zero pressure."

👉 Think of it as: New, comfort-focused vacation experience

3. Cost

Not talking exact prices — just the general feeling people have 👇

Icon of the Seas 👉 Typically mid-to-high range

👉 Mental impression: "This is a trip that needs serious planning."

World America 👉 Generally more accessible than Icon

👉 Mental impression: "I'm on a huge ship, but my budget isn't stressed."

📌 The point isn't cheap vs. expensive — it's:

Can you look at your bill at the end and think: Worth it.

4. Let's Just Pick for You

✔️ Choose Icon if you're the type who:

▶️ Wants maximum content on your first cruise

▶️ Can't stand boredom

▶️ Is traveling with family/kids and wants everyone to have something to do

✔️ Choose World America if you're the type who:

▶️ Already knows about Icon but wants to try a mega-ship experience

▶️ Cares more about "new ship + comfort + lower mental barrier"

▶️ Wants a comfortable big ship without being chased by activities all week

One-line summary: Icon is "packed schedule, high activity." World America is "budget-friendly mega-ship."

You're not really debating which one is better — you're deciding what kind of vacation pace you want.

Beyond WiFi Packages — How Else Can You Get Online on a Cruise?

A cruise trip involves three different internet environments from start to finish:

1. Departure Port

When boarding at the home port, your phone picks up land-based cell signals — just use it like normal.

2. Foreign Ports

When the ship docks overseas or you go ashore, you'll have signal but need international roaming data.

3. At Sea

Out on open water, far from cell towers, your phone can't connect directly. Communication goes through the ship's satellite link — that's when you need onboard WiFi.

🚢 Onboard WiFi Guide

1. Satellite WiFi

Ship WiFi runs on satellite connections — expensive to operate, so it's not cheap. But about 90% of cruise lines offer early-bird discounts! Book packages on the official website/app before sailing, and you'll typically save 30% vs. buying onboard. If you find a better price later, you can cancel and rebook.

2. Free Ship WiFi (App-Only)

Almost all cruise lines offer this. It only connects to the cruise line's official app — no general internet access. Useful for chatting with fellow passengers, checking daily activities, viewing menus, and booking facilities.

🌏 Shore Internet Guide

Once in port, stop using the ship's WiFi — it's slow and expensive. These options are much better:

1. International Roaming (Top Pick!)

Activate a regional data package on your phone. Stable signal, plus you can still receive calls. Important: switch to airplane mode when the ship sails, and turn it back on when you dock — avoid massive roaming charges at sea.

2. Portable WiFi (Best for Groups)

Rent at the terminal or buy in advance. Split the cost across multiple people — great value.

3. Free Public WiFi

Port-side cafés, 7-Eleven stores, and tourist centers often have open WiFi. Just ask the staff for the password when you go ashore.

🌏 Money-Saving Tips

  • Pre-book WiFi packages — many routes offer 20%-30% discounts when purchased before booking or boarding.

  • Airplane mode + WiFi ON after boarding — prevents accidental roaming charges at sea.

  • Disable auto-updates, cloud sync, and backups — these eat bandwidth and data in the background. Enable data-saver mode and set usage alerts on your phone and laptop.

  • Download offline content before departure — maps, entertainment, and important documents you'll want to access at sea.

Hidden Costs on Cruise Ships — What Are They Really?

🚢 How Payment Works on Board

💳 Credit Card (Recommended):

Bind your credit card via the cruise line's website or official app about 45 days before sailing. All onboard charges (cabin, tips, dining, shopping) are automatically charged to your room card. Settle everything at the end — no lines.

💸 Debit Card or Cash:

If you didn't pre-register, you can use a debit card or USD cash onboard. Note: debit card users usually need to settle their account at the Guest Services desk before disembarkation, which can be a hassle.

🎫 What's Included in Your Fare?

🛏️ Accommodation: Cabin with daily housekeeping

🍱 Dining: Main dining room (3-course formal dinner), buffet (24 hours), pizza bar, free ice cream, etc.

💃 Entertainment: Broadway-style shows, water parks, rock climbing, gym equipment, pools, and other facilities

👼 Kids: Youth clubs, childcare services (select hours)

⛴ Transportation: Port-to-port travel and port fees

❌ What's NOT Included (The Hidden Costs)

Service Tips: Unavoidable. Charged daily, auto-added to your bill, deducted before disembarkation.

Specialty Restaurants: Italian, Japanese, steakhouse, etc. — some also charge an additional service fee.

WiFi: The biggest budget trap! Buy packages early on the official app, or use free WiFi when in port.

Premium Activities: Skydiving simulator, spa, salon, North Star observation deck, shopping experiences, etc.

Drinks: Alcohol, soda, bottled water, sparkling water are all charged. Bring a reusable cup for free tap water.

Shore Excursions: Cruise-line-organized tours are convenient but overpriced. Consider booking through local agencies, TripAdvisor, or just explore on your own.

👛 Money-Saving Tips

✍️ Plan Ahead:

Use the official app to pre-book WiFi, shore excursions, specialty dining, entertainment, and drink packages — early booking usually means discounts.

💼 Pack Smart:

Avoid onboard markups! Some lines allow you to bring water, others don't — check in advance. Always pack: medications, toiletries, chargers, sunscreen, collapsible hangers, and extra snacks.

🥃 Get Your Money's Worth:

Free dining is already excellent. If you want specialty restaurants, look for launch-day or lunch-time promos. There are tons of free parties, shows, competitions, and lectures — make the most of them!

🎂 Score Freebies:

Mention birthdays or anniversaries when booking — you might get a surprise. Visit the spa on embarkation day for free tours or giveaways. Attend art auctions for free champagne.

How to Save Money on Cruise Ship WiFi

What's the worst thing about going on a cruise? Being cut off from the world, of course! 😭 You're drifting in international waters for days, and life without internet feels like forever.

Today we're using MSC Cruises as an example to walk you through getting connected — and saving enough to cover a steak dinner! 🥩💸

📲 How to Buy:

Usually through the cruise line's official website or app.

🔍 Which Package Should You Choose?

MSC now offers two main WiFi packages, and they've upgraded to Starlink low-orbit satellite networks — significantly better speed and stability than before!

✔️ Browse Package: Basic connection

Messaging and reading images/text only. No video streaming!

✔️ Browse & Stream Package: High-speed!

Video streaming, social media, posting to Instagram — all good.

💰 How to Get the Best Deal:

✅ Book early! Pre-cruise bookings often get up to 30% off

✅ Multi-device discount: One account can register multiple devices, with ~25% off for each additional device

✅ Free alternative: Without WiFi, you can still use the cruise app to message fellow passengers on the same sailing

✅ Use port WiFi: When the ship docks, you can use local carrier networks or free public WiFi to save on onboard data

✅ Turn off mobile data! Once at sea, make sure to disable mobile data on your phone — otherwise you could face massive roaming charges

What Pitfalls Should You Watch Out for When Booking a Cruise for the First Time?

Booking a cruise is indeed a skill, especially for beginners. Not only is there an overwhelming amount of information, but it's also easy to get scammed!

As a travel agency with years of experience in the cruise industry, today we'll expose the common pitfalls and scams to help you make smart purchases and avoid getting ripped off!

💣 Scam 1: Beware of "Unbelievably Low Prices"!

You might see tempting offers claiming "insider tickets" or "last-minute deals" at just 30% of the official website price? Wake up! There's no such thing as a free lunch!

❌ The Trap:
Scammers take your money without issuing tickets, or give you fake booking numbers. By the time you realize it, they've already blocked you and vanished.

✅ The Right Way:
Cruise prices are relatively transparent. Low prices do exist, but they won't be absurdly cheap. Book only through official authorized agents or the cruise line's official website, and always pay to a corporate/business account! Block anyone who asks you to transfer money to a "personal" account!

💣 Scam 2: The "All-Inclusive" Word Game!

Many promotions advertise "$XXX All-Inclusive," but once onboard, you're just a lamb waiting to be slaughtered!

❌ The Trap:
The quoted price only covers the cruise ticket, excluding thousands of dollars in port fees, taxes, and cruise service gratuities. Some even have mandatory charges onboard.

✅ The Right Way:
Before booking, you must ask clearly: "Does this price include port fees and taxes? What are the mandatory gratuities once onboard?" Reject hidden bills!
*Some cruise lines allow you to request adjustments or removal of gratuities at the guest services desk, but valid reasons are required.

💣 Scam 3: "Discount Rooms" Turn into "Nightmare Rooms"

Bought a "Guaranteed Cabin" or discounted room to save money? While you might get a steal, the risk is huge.

❌ The Trap:
The so-called "random assignment" often means you'll get a room near the engines at the bottom of the ship, below the theater, or with your view completely blocked by lifeboats.

✅ The Right Way:
Cabin selection is key to your cruise experience. When traveling with seniors or children, never choose a random/guaranteed room just to save money! Even if it costs a bit more, check the deck plan and "specify your room number." It's best to avoid cabins located directly above or below disco lounges, theaters, casinos, galleys, or engine rooms.

💣 Scam 4: Fake Agents Asking for "Personal Transfers"!

They ask you to transfer money via Zelle or similar methods to a personal account, instead of a corporate account or the cruise line's official payment system.

❌ The Trap:
Anyone claiming to be a customer service rep or private channel agent who gives you various excuses to transfer money to a personal account—block them immediately!

✅ The Right Way:
Book only through official authorized agents or the cruise line's official website, and always pay to a corporate account! Legitimate agents can process credit card payments directly to the cruise line. They will never ask for a personal transfer. Payments must be made via credit card to the cruise line's official account.

💣 Scam 5: Unfair Cancellation/Change "Fine Print"!

Unlike flights and hotels, cruise cancellation policies are extremely strict.

❌ The Trap:
Many unlicensed agents don't sign formal contracts. They casually promise "full refund anytime" but hide unfair clauses in the fine print. When you actually can't go, you get nothing back!

✅ The Right Way:
Always book through official authorized agents or the cruise line's official website, and insist on signing a formal travel contract! Before signing, carefully review the "Cancellation Policy." We highly recommend purchasing travel cancellation insurance to protect against sudden illness or emergencies.

💣 Scam 6: The "Free Cruise" Bait!

There's no such thing as a free lunch—the "free" option is always the most expensive!

❌ The Trap:
Scammers often use fake "prize wins" or "free experiences" to lure you into paying high "taxes," "processing fees," or push various money-draining products onboard.

✅ The Right Way:
Keep your eyes open! Verify all promotions through the cruise line's official channels or reputable travel agencies. The only reliable way to learn about and book cruises is through official cruise websites, well-known travel agencies, or licensed and certified agents.

Important Cruise Information

Important Cruise Information:

  1. Passenger check-in typically begins approximately 4 hours prior to departure. Guests are advised to arrive at the terminal 4 hours in advance, and no later than 2 hours before departure. All passengers must board on time; late arrivals will not be accommodated, and no refunds will be issued.

  2. Upon arrival at the terminal, attach the cruise luggage tags to your large checked bags. Please write your stateroom number and your English name or Pinyin (must match your passport) on the tag. Your checked luggage will be delivered to your stateroom approximately one hour after boarding. Please note: Do not pack essential travel documents (e.g., passport, Green Card, boarding documents) in your checked luggage, as you will not be able to complete check-in or board the ship without them.

  3. After checking your luggage, proceed to the cruise terminal service counter to complete boarding procedures. Have your passport and completed boarding documents ready and wait in line. During check-in, the cruise line may collect your passport for safekeeping. Be sure to request a receipt from the cruise line so you can retrieve your passport for immigration procedures after the cruise.

  4. Upon completing check-in, each passenger will receive a Cruise Boarding Card (which displays the ship name, departure date, passenger's English name, dining restaurant, dining time, table number, stateroom number, and passenger account number). This card serves as your passenger identification, is required for embarking and disembarking, and functions as your stateroom key and onboard credit card throughout the voyage. Please carry it with you at all times. If lost, report it immediately to the guest services desk onboard to request a replacement.

  5. After boarding, a crew member will escort you to your stateroom. To ensure your luggage is delivered correctly, please do not change staterooms arbitrarily. If vacancies are available, passengers may request an upgrade to a higher-category stateroom after departure, but must pay the full price difference in cash or traveler's checks. Each passenger is issued a stateroom key card (which also serves as your onboard account card and boarding pass). When leaving your stateroom, always take your key card with you to avoid being locked out.

  6. An emergency lifeboat drill will be conducted on the day of boarding. When the alarm sounds, please put on your life jacket (located in the top shelf of the closet or under the bed) and proceed to your designated muster station (the muster station and lifeboat number are indicated on the life jacket). Please follow the crew's demonstration for proper life jacket usage, or refer to the illustrated instructions posted on the bathroom wall.

  7. Almost every stateroom onboard is equipped with a safe. Please store valuables, cash, and other important items inside. In the event of loss, neither our company nor the cruise line will be held responsible.

  8. If a passenger temporarily changes their itinerary for personal reasons, or disembarks mid-voyage due to force majeure or other reasons, all outstanding fees must be paid in full. No refunds will be issued (including for any unused meals).

  9. In the event of itinerary changes due to weather, mechanical failure, political or economic conditions, cruise suspensions, or other force majeure factors, the cruise line reserves the right to modify the itinerary to protect passenger safety and interests. Passengers may not object to such changes.

  10. The ship is equipped with a medical center and medical staff. Additional fees may apply depending on passenger needs.

  11. During the voyage, if luggage is damaged or lost, passengers must immediately report it to the cruise line's guest services desk and request a copy of the relevant documentation. All liability claims will be processed according to applicable insurance policies.

  12. In accordance with cruise line regulations, smoking is strictly prohibited in staterooms during the voyage. If you need to smoke, please proceed to the deck or designated smoking areas. A cleaning fee of $250 per night will be charged for violations. Passengers are solely responsible for these charges; our company assumes no liability.

  13. Passengers are required to abide by the cruise line's rules and requirements during the voyage. Any damage to public property must be compensated accordingly. Cruise tour terms and conditions are subject to periodic revision and will be promptly updated on the official website. Agents must carefully review the tour regulations and cruise line policies before assisting guests with registration. Our company's obligations are limited to these terms and conditions. Unless otherwise explicitly stated herein or required by law, we shall not be liable for any indirect, consequential, incidental, or punitive damages.
